A Short History of the Ship
The Gaspesienne trawlers were built in
Lunenburg Nova Scotia at the Smith & Rhuland Yard (the Home of the
Bluenose) for service in the Gaspe' Peninsula region of Quebec. The first
hulls were produced around 1900 and many were built for service in Quebec.
This model was taken from Builders Drawings prepared by Howard I Chappelle
and were obtained from the Smithsonian Institute. The model is entirely
hand-crafted by the builder and is made of clear white pine. It is fully
appointed above and below decks as scheduled in the drawings and even has
a detailed diesel motor, made of wood, and placed under an engine cover in
the accommodation cabin, just forward of the wheel-house and also has a
baffled diesel oil tank placed under the wheel-house sole (floor). The
Debbie Ann took 1, 506 man-hours to produce from scratch and every
component of the model is correct as per the drawings and is properly and
accurately scaled to the right size.
